February 03, 2010 The Bible is Good for Good Works
The Bible is a fabulous book! It is so much more than just good literature. It is rich and deep and full of wisdom. Listen to what it claims about itself: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
The Bible is good for teaching. It is the textbook for knowing God and understanding life.
The Bible is good for rebuking. It confronts errors in our beliefs and thinking. We all get carried away with strange ideas from time to time. The Bible is like a plumb line to show us where we are out of whack.
The Bible is good for correcting. It not only shows us what’s wrong with our lives but also helps to correct what is wrong. Those who read the Bible and apply it to their lives get God’s help.
The Bible is good for training. It shows us what is right – what we ought to do. We don’t want to spend our lives avoiding bad stuff. We want to be trained to do good stuff!
That brings us to the last claim. The Bible is good for good works. It equips us to do good in a world that has a huge shortage of good works. Our individual circumstances are as different as we are, but regardless of our situation, if we apply the Bible to our lives, it will equip us to do good in every possible situation.
